Design a curriculum that can be taught to kids in an after school setting. Grant would cover curriculum development and materials. There could be one module for K-3rd grade and one for 4th grade – 8th grade.
Over time, this could be a class that could be packaged for other schools to use. It could be a curriculum that would weave into the fabric of the regular teaching curriculum or it could be a stand-alone unit.
Possibly engage someone from Stanford [Woods Institute for the Environment - Stanford University - Creating Practical Solutions for People and the Planet] to help improve this over time and explore making this a joint venture. Another group to consider would be the CA Academy of Sciences. This would be a great brand to align the school/program.
Some ideas for the curriculum:
i. What is a carbon footprint?
ii. How to calculate the carbon footprint of your school
iii. How can you reduce your schools carbon footprint (recycling, energy reductions, water conservation, etc)
iv. Make your buildings an operations more efficient (efficient landscape, lighting and HVAC strategies)
v. Generate your own alternative Energy (Solar, Wind, Geo-thermal, ... do some hands on demonstration projects)
vi. How can you offset your impact
